The Bible: The Source of American Government

Elections, both national and local, are a regular part of life in America. Many, probably most, Americans today are unaware of the close connection between our American form of government and the Bible. The Bible says, Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. Psalm 33:12

From the beginning it is evident that the Founding Fathers sought God’s blessing and guidance as they crafted a form of government drawing its essentials from the Bible. Consider the following examples from the Constitution:

Article II, Section1 – President a natural born citizen. Thou shalt in any wise set him king over thee, whom the LORD thy God shall choose: one from among thy brethren shalt thou set king over thee: thou mayest not set a stranger over thee, which is not thy brother.    Deuteronomy 17:15

Article III, Section 3 – Witnesses and capital punishment. At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shalt he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.  Deuteronomy 17:6

Article IV, Section 4 – Republicanism: electing leaders at the local, county, state, and federal level. Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:    Exodus 18:21

Three branches of government.

For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.    Isaiah 33:22

Don’t forget to pray for our elected officials.

I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.   I Timothy 2:1-2
